Special programming tackles global food security

(St. Paul, Minn.) January 24, 2012ñAmerican Public Mediaís Marketplace, PBS NEWSHOUR, the Center for Investigative Reporting and Homelands Productions are collaborating on a multi-platform media project, "Food for 9 Billion." The project examines the challenge of feeding the world at a time of growing demand, changing diets, rising food and energy prices, shrinking land and water resources and accelerating climate change.

Both in format and in subject matter, "Food for 9 Billion" will be one of the most thorough explorations of global food security issues to appear in public media.

The main project elements for "Food for 9 Billion" include a year-long series of radio features on Marketplace, a year-long series of video features on PBS NEWSHOUR and an online experience managed by the Center for Investigative Reporting at foodfor9billion.org. Specialists at Cornell University, Franklin & Marshall College and PBS NEWSHOUR are designing interactive web features and materials for teachers and students.

On Monday, Jan. 23, Marketplace and PBS NEWSHOUR each broadcast special features on the ways in which rapid population growth contributes to a deepening food crisis in the Philippines. Both were reported by Los Angeles-based freelance journalist Sam Eaton. Earlier features examined the role of science in boosting global food production, the roots of famine in eastern Africa, and the debate in Egypt over food policies and prices.

"The struggle to put food on the table is such a basic human story," said Homelands Productions' Jonathan Miller, executive producer for "Food for 9 Billion." "We can see it in the families we meet in the Philippines, who are determined to gain some control over their futures. But itís also a complex societal story, mixing economics, science, ethics, politics and culture."

"Feeding the world will take so much more than producing more food," said Sharon Tiller, who heads digital media at The Center for Investigative Reporting. "The stories we produce across multiple platforms--including television, radio, animation, and interactive features-- will reveal how factors as diverse as population, climate, politics and global trade all interact, allowing us to create a three-dimensional portrait of the monumental challenge we face."

COMMON GOOD BOOKS OPENS AT MACALESTER

Garrison Keillor's bookstore lands on Snelling Avenue.

St. Paul, Minn.Common Good Books is opening a store at Macalester College, owner Garrison Keillor announced today. The independent bookstore will reside at 38 South Snelling Avenue in the 1923 Lampert Building, just north of the corner of Grand and Snelling avenues.

The building is owned by Macalester and the college's textbook store is upstairs.

"We are delighted that Common Good Books will be part of the Macalester community," said President Brian Rosenberg, "and look forward to having a bookstore of its caliber on campus.

"Macalester has a special relationship with Garrison Keillor, since the very first Prairie Home Companion took place in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Theater in 1974, and he's been back to campus many times since. It's simply a good fit for us."

Renovations will begin December 1st, and the bookstore is expected to open in April 2012.

"We'll be just behind my favorite bakery and around the corner from a terrific cheese shop and a few blocks east of the old Hungry Mind, where I used to buy all my books," said Keillor. "And Wet Paint, where I buy pens and paper. And around the corner from St. Paul's on the Hill, a good Anglo-Catholic church. It's a good neighborhood, and with all those college students around, there's a sense of high spirits in the air, and you need to inhale that if you're in the book business."

"Common Good Books has found a large and loyal clientele, and we hope they'll like the new store," said Martin Schmutterer, store manager. "The new space is larger and more convenient, and we'll partner with Macalester for more literary events."

Macalester has been without a trade bookstore since July 2004, when Ruminator Books, which opened in 1970 as the Hungry Mind Bookstore, went out of business.

When he opened Common Good Books in 2006, Keillor wrote:

(St. Paul, Minn.) – November 29, 2011 –American Public Media announced today that it has acquired pioneering community funding website Spot.Us, and will incorporate it into the Public Insight Network(PIN) crowd-sourcing platform. The combination lays the foundation for a networked approach to sourcing and funding high-quality journalism that will help newsrooms and journalists gather the resources and insights they need to do great reporting.

"Spot.Us and PIN both believe in the power of the independent voice in journalism – from both journalists and sources, making the acquisition an ideal move," said Joaquin Alvarado, senior vice president of digital innovation at APM. "PIN believes in the important work of Spot.Us and we will explore opportunities to continue to drive the effectiveness and relevancy of the site even further in the future."

"We couldn’t be more excited about joining forces with the Public Insight Network to change the way journalism is both funded and reported," said David Cohn, founder of Spot.Us. "Combined, we have a real opportunity to be a positive force, paving the way for journalism to be truly public from the ground up."

Spot.Us was founded in 2008, making this November the 3-year anniversary. Launched by David Cohn with technical help from Erik Sundelof, Spot.Us was made possible with $340,000 in seed funding from the Knight Foundation through the Knight News Challenge, an international contest to find innovative, digital ideas for delivering news and information. The Knight Foundation also supported the Public Insight Network with a grant in 2008.

Spot.Us gives the public the opportunity to fund important journalism that is then distributed by newsrooms around the country. Community members can also take surveys from site sponsors to earn credits they can use to support the story of their choice. Spot.Us has also drawn on support from individual funders, a network of advisors, designers and developers.

Founded in 2003, American Public Media's Public Insight Network is dedicated to journalistic excellence, innovation and collaboration. (St. Paul, MN) - November 21, 2011 - American Public Media (APM) has named Paddy Hirsch the new senior producer of personal finance for the entire Marketplace portfolio, including production of Marketplace Money. Hirsch will oversee editorial content for Marketplace Money, hosted by Tess Vigeland, as well as develop new ways to expand personal finance coverage beyond Marketplace Money to all programs and platforms, including Marketplace, Marketplace Morning Report, Marketplace Index and online. Hirsch also will continue hosting the Marketplace Whiteboard, a video explainer of financial and economic terms.

"Our latest audience research showed that listeners want to hear more personal finance news from Marketplace," said Deborah Clark, executive producer. "Three years into the economic downturn, people are looking more than ever before for context to understand how the broader economy effects them at the personal level – whether it's how to survive the loss of a job, plan for retirement or weigh the consequences of walking away from a home on which they owe more money than they originally paid."

Hirsch's hire is part of a new effort from the Marketplace portfolio to cover personal finance across all the platforms. He will also help lead initiatives, such as the successful collaborations with The New York Times"Money Through the Ages" and "Which Way Home?"

"At Marketplace we are constantly fine tuning our on-air and online content to respond to our audience's wants and needs when it comes to business news programming," said Hirsch. Hirsch joined Marketplace in 2007, just as the credit crunch that preceded the 2008 financial crisis began to take hold. He administered the New York bureau, the Entrepreneurship desk and the senior business correspondent during the crisis, and he spearheaded Marketplace's financial markets coverage both during the crisis and afterwards, as the economy slipped into recession. He was awarded a Knight Fellowship at Stanford University in 2010, and he returned to Marketplace in July of 2011. Hirsch is also the creator of the Marketplace Whiteboard, an online video series in which he uses simple sketches and colorful analogy to explain financial and economic terminology in plain and understandable terms.

Specials to examine impact of European Debt Crisis on Global Economy

(ST. PAUL, Minn.) November 02, 2011 - Today, BBC World Service's business program Business Daily and American Public Media's Marketplace will each present co-hosted specials, examining the impact of the debt crisis in Europe on the wider global economy.

The programs will be co-hosted by Business Daily's Justin Rowlatt and Marketplace's Kai Ryssdal, and will feature special reports from Kenya and China, with Justin and Kai out on the streets of London and Los Angeles to gauge the mood of the public.

The special edition of Marketplace will air during Marketplace's regular air time on Wednesday, November 2, on public radio stations in the United States. The special edition of Business Daily will air on BBC World Service on Wednesday, 2 November, from 8.30 gmt.

And so he's taking his ever-popular popular radio show, A Prairie Home Companion, to Honolulu, Hawaii, for two live broadcasts on December 31.

Prairie Home's regular Saturday live broadcast begins at 12:45 p.m. Hawaii Time. Then, at 4:45 p.m. (HT) it's "A Prairie Home Companion's Hawaiian New Year's Eve," a three-hour special broadcast that will ring in 2012 across the country. Pulitzer Prize winner to lead PIN editorial staff

(St. Paul, Minn, October 6, 2011) - American Public Media and the Missouri School of Journalism announced today that professor Jacqui Banaszynski will steer reporting efforts for APM's Public Insight Network (PIN), an initiative that connects trusted journalists with knowledgeable sources and each other. Banaszynski, a respected journalist, editor and educator, will begin immediately.

With Banaszynski as collaborations editor, PIN will expand its editorial team in order to produce stories of national importance and regional relevance and support similar reporting projects in PIN newsrooms around the country. Banaszynski also will embed PIN in her journalism classes and help establish a foundation for a sustained partnership between APM, the University of Missouri's journalism school and the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute.

"Jacqui has a stellar reputation in professional journalism and is a talented and inspiring leader," said Jon McTaggart, President and CEO, APM. "We are proud to be working with her and to be partnering with one of the preeminent journalism schools in the country."

Dean Mills, dean of the School of Journalism, said the collaboration has "nearly limitless" potential to strengthen journalism in the public interest. "The partnership with PIN," he said, "is a perfect fit with the Reynolds Institute and its mission to join citizens and journalists in programs that benefit democracy."

Banaszynski holds the Knight Chair in Editing at the University of Missouri and is a long-time faculty member at the Poynter Institute. She's mentored and motivated journalists around the world to tell stories of meaning and consequence. As a reporter for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, she won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing for "AIDS in the Heartland," an intimate look at the life and death of a Minnesota farm couple. She was a finalist for the 1986 Pulitzer in international reporting for her coverage of the famine in sub-Saharan Africa. Her reporting has taken her to all seven continents, including Antarctica.

"As the number of PIN newsrooms multiplies, so do the opportunities to work together and with the public, to do reporting that is more accurate, thoughtful, transparent and trustworthy," said PIN director Linda Fantin. "I can think of no one better than Jacqui to inspire and lead those collaborations."

Banaszynski, a former editor for The Seattle Times and The Oregonian in Portland, says she finds the prospect of working with PIN irresistible. "PIN is a 21st Century journalistic venture that is as exciting as it is practical and principled," said Banaszynski. "I look forward to working in partnership with newsrooms to foster the inclusiveness that is essential to true journalistic purpose in our fragmented and fast-moving world. Today's journalism students -- tomorrow's journalism leaders -- will be a core part of this initiative, and help us determine our role in the future."

Ten concerts will beam from Carnegie Hall's main Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, while the venue's Zankel Hall and Weill Recital Hall will each play host to more intimate performances. Opened in 1891, the venerable Carnegie Hall celebrates its 120th anniversary throughout its 2011-2012 season.

The series is sponsored, in part, by Macy's, and distributed to public radio stations by APM.

Distinct in its size, scope, and reach, CARNEGIE HALL LIVE will bring a modern-day spin to the live radio broadcast with innovative and robust digital features that will build community and conversation around the music. During every live broadcast, WQXR, APM and digital partner NPR Music will host live chats, moderated by guest hosts on www.WQXR.org and www.carnegiehall.org. Through NPR Music's live event application and Twitter hashtag #CHLive, the online audience will be able to chat with each other and the hosts. The site will offer an exciting array of photographs and related video content, and audiences will able to submit questions to be answered during the intermission features created as part of select broadcasts.

Tied to the broadcast series, both www.wqxr.org/carnegiehalllive and www.classicalapm.org will stream live and on-demand audio; special videos of performers in WQXR's "Cafe Concerts"; "Top 5 at 105" videos featuring conductors talking about their favorite pieces and recordings; Carnegie Hall-produced video profiles; and photo galleries from each performance.

(ST. PAUL, Minn.) — Right out of the gate, A Prairie Home Companion's 38th season promises good times and great music — a brand-new batch of entertainment from the show that's kept millions coming back week after week for almost four decades.

The fun begins on Saturday, September 17, with a live broadcast from the Fitzgerald Theater in downtown St. Paul, followed by the annual street dance and meatloaf supper on Exchange Street, right in front of the Fitz.

Actress Sue Scott, Tim Russell (the man of many voices), and sound-effects wizard Tom Keith will be on hand, along with the Guy's All-Star Shoe Band, led by pianist Richard Dworsky. Special guests include The Derailers, a hard-driving, roots-country band from Austin, Texas, and Quebecois quartet Le Vent du Nord. And Keillor gets us caught up on the news from Lake Wobegon during his signature monologue.

After the broadcast, everyone heads outside for the Prairie Home Street Dance. Enjoy the music, the food (the famous $5 meatloaf supper), and the fun, with Garrison leading the festivities. This event is open to the public and free — save a small charge for refreshments.

August 29, 2011 - Today, American Public Media's (APM) Marketplace launches Marketplace Index, a weekday report hosted by David Brancaccio that will "psychoanalyze" the economy each day as reflected in the markets. Marketplace Index is the latest example of Marketplace's commitment to providing timely economic news in an approachable way, so Americans and their families know how daily business developments impact them.

"No one is in a better position than Marketplace to address rising anxiety about the economy", said JJ Yore, Marketplace's VP and general manager. "Timely economic news during these turbulent times is essential. American Public Media Names Deborah Clark Executive Producer, Marketplace

(ST. PAUL, Minn.) August 22, 2011 - American Public Media (APM) today named Deborah Clark executive producer of its flagship Marketplace franchise. In her new role, Clark will oversee editorial content of the widest reaching business news program service in the country. Marketplace Morning Report, Marketplace, Marketplace Money, and Marketplace Tech Report attract more than nine million listeners each week via public radio stations across the country. Clark succeeds long-time executive producer JJ Yore, recently appointed general manager of the franchise.

"Well over a hundred candidates applied to be Marketplace's next executive producer," said Yore. "In the end, Deb's broadcast journalism experience, her passion, and her deep knowledge of what makes Marketplace unique earned her the job."

Clark originally joined Marketplace in 1995 as an associate producer, and returned in 2009 as senior producer, Marketplace Money. Clark is the recipient of several major broadcasting awards, including the Peabody and DuPont - both for her past work at Marketplace.

Keillor and company to do concerts in 20 cities coast to coast

(SAINT PAUL, Minn.) On Friday, August 12, Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion "Summer Love" Tour kicks off a 20-city run that will take the popular radio host and his pals from East Coast to West Coast, Michigan to Memphis.

This concert tour on the everlasting theme of romantic love will be jam-packed with tender duets and ballads, poetry, and stories. Perfect for a late-summer date night!

While these are not APHC broadcast shows, they will include many favorite Prairie Home Companion elements - Guy Noir, Dusty and Lefty, and the News from Lake Wobegon. The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band and sound-effects man Fred Newman will be on hand. And depending on the particular date, you'll find either Andra Suchy, Heather Masse, or Sara Watkins on vocal duty - each a top-flight artist.

Garrison Keillor is the author of numerous books, including Life Among the Lutherans (Augsburg Books) and Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance (Viking), and the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently Good Poems: American Places (Viking). He is the founder and host of the acclaimed public radio programs A Prairie Home Companion and The Writer's Almanac.

North Dakota native Andra Suchy is the daughter of two talented singers. By the time she was in grade school, she was traveling around, doing concerts and festivals with her family. These days, she sings with several groups in the Twin Cities area and has a solo recording called Patchwork Story.

Growing up in rural Maine, Heather Masse sang hymns and folk songs around home with her family. Now based in New York, this New England Conservatory of Music alum is a one-third of the Juno Award-winning Canadian trio The Wailin' Jennys. Her solo album is titled Song Bird.

Singer, songwriter, fiddle player Sara Watkins was only eight when she became one-third of the Grammy Award-winning acoustic trio Nickel Creek. Two decades later, she struck out on her own. A solo album, Sara Watkins (Nonesuch), was released in 2009.

Sound-effects man Fred Newman is an actor, writer, musician, and sound designer for film and TV. He is author of the book (and CD/CD-ROM) MouthSounds. Fred admits that, growing up, he was unceremoniously removed from several classrooms, "once by my bottom lip."

The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band is Richard Dworsky (leader, keyboards), Pat Donohue (guitar), Gary Raynor (bass), Peter Johnson (percussion), and Richard Kriehn (fiddle).
