BBC WORLD SERVICE AND AMERICAN PUBLIC MEDIA'S MARKETPLACE CO-PRESENT SPECIAL PROGRAMMING
Specials to examine impact of European Debt Crisis on Global Economy
(ST. PAUL, Minn.) November 02, 2011 - Today, BBC World Service's business program Business Daily and American Public Media's Marketplace will each present co-hosted specials, examining the impact of the debt crisis in Europe on the wider global economy.
The programs will be co-hosted by Business Daily's Justin Rowlatt and Marketplace's Kai Ryssdal, and will feature special reports from Kenya and China, with Justin and Kai out on the streets of London and Los Angeles to gauge the mood of the public.
The special edition of Marketplace will air during Marketplace's regular air time on Wednesday, November 2, on public radio stations in the United States. The special edition of Business Daily will air on BBC World Service on Wednesday, 2 November, from 8.30 gmt.
American Public Media's Marketplace is currently broadcast by nearly 500 public radio stations nationwide across the United States. The program focuses on the latest business news both nationally and internationally, the global economy, and wider events linked to the financial markets. The only national daily business news program originating from the West Coast, Marketplace has domestic bureaus in several US cities including New York, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles. It also has international bureaus in London and Shanghai. With a weekly audience of more than nine million listeners, the Marketplace portfolio of programs are the most popular business programs in America.
Business Daily is BBC World Service's daily business news program that broadcasts to a global audience and examines the big issues facing the global economy. The program asks the big questions about free trade, technology and investment, and includes analysis of management and marketing trends, and reports on business news from around the world via the BBC's global network of reporters. Business Daily broadcasts on BBC World Service's English network, which has a total weekly reach of 43 million (source: World Service annual audience estimate July 2011).
Wednesday's co-production marks the second major collaboration between the BBC World Service and Marketplace. Since 2010, BBC World Service has been contributing global economic reports to Marketplace Morning Report. Wednesday's special co-production marks the first time that Marketplace has featured a co-host from another media organization.
Steve Titherington, Senior Commissioner BBC World Service said, "This is a time when the whole world is trying to make sense of the new global economy, and we hope this collaboration will help share expertise in a crucial area. Marketplace is a popular and acclaimed program and we are delighted that through this collaboration, BBC World Service business news and stories will now be part of its daily editorial line-up. This is an opportunity for BBC World Service to build on its reputation and growth in the U.S., and to reach new audiences."
"We're thrilled to be partnering with BBC and expanding Marketplace's global expertise on business developments," said Deborah Clark, Marketplace Executive Producer. "The world's economies are more interconnected than ever, and developments tens-of-thousands-of miles away have immediate impacts on the lives of Americans across economic spectrums. Expanding our coverage via partnership with the BBC will help Marketplace continue to lead the way in keeping Americans up to speed on economic events around the globe."
