COMMON GOOD BOOKS OPENS AT MACALESTER
Garrison Keillor's bookstore lands on Snelling Avenue.
St. Paul, Minn. — Common Good Books is opening a store at Macalester College, owner Garrison Keillor announced today. The independent bookstore will reside at 38 South Snelling Avenue in the 1923 Lampert Building, just north of the corner of Grand and Snelling avenues.
The building is owned by Macalester and the college's textbook store is upstairs.
"We are delighted that Common Good Books will be part of the Macalester community," said President Brian Rosenberg, "and look forward to having a bookstore of its caliber on campus.
"Macalester has a special relationship with Garrison Keillor, since the very first Prairie Home Companion took place in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Theater in 1974, and he's been back to campus many times since. It's simply a good fit for us."
Renovations will begin December 1st, and the bookstore is expected to open in April 2012.
"We'll be just behind my favorite bakery and around the corner from a terrific cheese shop and a few blocks east of the old Hungry Mind, where I used to buy all my books," said Keillor. "And Wet Paint, where I buy pens and paper. And around the corner from St. Paul's on the Hill, a good Anglo-Catholic church. It's a good neighborhood, and with all those college students around, there's a sense of high spirits in the air, and you need to inhale that if you're in the book business."
"Common Good Books has found a large and loyal clientele, and we hope they'll like the new store," said Martin Schmutterer, store manager. "The new space is larger and more convenient, and we'll partner with Macalester for more literary events."
Macalester has been without a trade bookstore since July 2004, when Ruminator Books, which opened in 1970 as the Hungry Mind Bookstore, went out of business.
When he opened Common Good Books in 2006, Keillor wrote:
A bookstore is for people who love books and need
To touch them, open them, browse for a while,
And find some common good — that's why we read.
Readers and writers are two sides of the same gold coin.
You write and I read and in that moment I find
A union more perfect than any club I could join:
The simple intimacy of being one mind.
Here in a book-filled room on a busy street,
Strangers — living and dead — are hoping to meet.
Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,958 students. Macalester is nationally recognized for its long-standing commitment to academic excellence, internationalism, multiculturalism, and civic engagement. Learn more at macalester.edu.

AMERICAN PUBLIC MEDIA’S PUBLIC INSIGHT NETWORK ACQUIRES SPOT.US
(St. Paul, Minn.) – November 29, 2011 –American Public Media announced today that it has acquired pioneering community funding website Spot.Us, and will incorporate it into the Public Insight Network(PIN) crowd-sourcing platform. The combination lays the foundation for a networked approach to sourcing and funding high-quality journalism that will help newsrooms and journalists gather the resources and insights they need to do great reporting.
"Spot.Us and PIN both believe in the power of the independent voice in journalism – from both journalists and sources, making the acquisition an ideal move," said Joaquin Alvarado, senior vice president of digital innovation at APM. "PIN believes in the important work of Spot.Us and we will explore opportunities to continue to drive the effectiveness and relevancy of the site even further in the future."
"We couldn’t be more excited about joining forces with the Public Insight Network to change the way journalism is both funded and reported," said David Cohn, founder of Spot.Us. "Combined, we have a real opportunity to be a positive force, paving the way for journalism to be truly public from the ground up."
Spot.Us was founded in 2008, making this November the 3-year anniversary. Launched by David Cohn with technical help from Erik Sundelof, Spot.Us was made possible with $340,000 in seed funding from the Knight Foundation through the Knight News Challenge, an international contest to find innovative, digital ideas for delivering news and information. The Knight Foundation also supported the Public Insight Network with a grant in 2008.
Spot.Us gives the public the opportunity to fund important journalism that is then distributed by newsrooms around the country. Community members can also take surveys from site sponsors to earn credits they can use to support the story of their choice. Spot.Us has also drawn on support from individual funders, a network of advisors, designers and developers.
Founded in 2003, American Public Media's Public Insight Network is dedicated to journalistic excellence, innovation and collaboration. PIN gives newsrooms the capacity to do smart, targeted crowd-sourcing on deadline. More than 130,000 PIN sources around the country shape news coverage at 60 partner news organizations. Sources sign up by responding to online surveys, participating in virtual and in-person forums, playing serious games and meeting PIN journalists in person. Demographic information and insights are stored in a secure, searchable database. Participating journalists query the network for knowledgeable sources, test hunches, identify trends and support production of major news projects.

AMERICAN PUBLIC MEDIA NAMES PADDY HIRSCHSENIOR PRODUCER, PERSONAL FINANCE, MARKETPLACE
(St. Paul, MN) - November 21, 2011 - American Public Media (APM) has named Paddy Hirsch the new senior producer of personal finance for the entire Marketplace portfolio, including production of Marketplace Money. Hirsch will oversee editorial content for Marketplace Money, hosted by Tess Vigeland, as well as develop new ways to expand personal finance coverage beyond Marketplace Money to all programs and platforms, including Marketplace, Marketplace Morning Report, Marketplace Index and online. Hirsch also will continue hosting the Marketplace Whiteboard, a video explainer of financial and economic terms.
"Our latest audience research showed that listeners want to hear more personal finance news from Marketplace," said Deborah Clark, executive producer. "Three years into the economic downturn, people are looking more than ever before for context to understand how the broader economy effects them at the personal level – whether it's how to survive the loss of a job, plan for retirement or weigh the consequences of walking away from a home on which they owe more money than they originally paid."
Hirsch's hire is part of a new effort from the Marketplace portfolio to cover personal finance across all the platforms. He will also help lead initiatives, such as the successful collaborations with The New York Times – "Money Through the Ages" and "Which Way Home?"
"At Marketplace we are constantly fine tuning our on-air and online content to respond to our audience's wants and needs when it comes to business news programming," said Hirsch. "I'm excited by the prospect of taking on such a pivotal role at American Public Media, and I'm looking forward to helping to consolidate Marketplace's position as the country's most reliable source of business, economic and personal finance news and information."
Hirsch joined Marketplace in 2007, just as the credit crunch that preceded the 2008 financial crisis began to take hold. He administered the New York bureau, the Entrepreneurship desk and the senior business correspondent during the crisis, and he spearheaded Marketplace's financial markets coverage both during the crisis and afterwards, as the economy slipped into recession. He was awarded a Knight Fellowship at Stanford University in 2010, and he returned to Marketplace in July of 2011. Hirsch is also the creator of the Marketplace Whiteboard, an online video series in which he uses simple sketches and colorful analogy to explain financial and economic terminology in plain and understandable terms.

AMERICAN PUBLIC MEDIA'S PUBLIC INSIGHT NETWORK ANNOUNCES FIRST INTERNATIONAL PARTNER, THE MAIL & GUARDIAN
(St. Paul, MN) - November 16, 2011 - American Public Media's Public Insight Network® (PIN) is honored to welcome the Mail & Guardian in Johannesburg, South Africa as its first international newsroom partner.
"Media plays an essential role in addressing and exposing the top issues confronting communities, and the Mail & Guardian has long proven this with their groundbreaking news coverage," said Joaquin Alvarado, senior vice president of digital innovation at APM. "PIN's crowd-sourcing format will allow the people of South Africa to engage more fully in the news making process, by providing a platform for them to share their insight and expertise."
"In a country and continent where the voices of people on the ground are too often marginalised, PIN represents an exciting opportunity for the Mail & Guardian," says Verashni Pillay, Mail & Guardian deputy online editor. "Already we are seeing responses pouring in, in keeping with the international trend of bringing audiences closer to the news production process. Article ideas have taken on a new hue, with the possibility of multiple sourcing from people we would not ordinarily have had such easy access to. We're looking forward to the varied stories and voices PIN will help bring to the Mail & Guardian."
The Mail & Guardian has a rich history in South Africa, and was one of the leading opponents of apartheid in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, the paper is a must-read for anyone interested in South African politics, including key foreign policy decision-makers in Washington, London and Brussels.
Recently, the paper has become well known for its investigative reporting, particularly into corruption. The Mail & Guardian's Centre for Investigative Journalism (MGCIJ) went live in April 2010. A first in South Africa, it is a non-profit center mandated to develop investigative journalism in the public interest. It aims to do so by producing deeper investigative stories and advancing the journalistic profession through internships and advocacy.
Founded in 2003, American Public Media's Public Insight Network is dedicated to journalistic excellence, innovation and collaboration. PIN gives newsrooms the capacity to do smart, targeted crowd-sourcing on deadline. More than 130,000 PIN sources around the world shape news coverage at 60 partner news organizations. A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION NEW YEAR'S LULU FROM HONOLULU
Garrison Keillor and the APHC cast ring in the new year with two broadcasts from Blaisdell Concert Hall. Tickets on sale Saturday, November 19th.
(St. Paul, Minn.) — Not everyone seeks out cold and snow for New Year's. Even dyed-in-the-wool Minnesotan Garrison Keillor can go for a hit of balmy weather in the dead of winter. And so he's taking his ever-popular popular radio show, A Prairie Home Companion, to Honolulu, Hawaii, for two live broadcasts on December 31.
Prairie Home's regular Saturday live broadcast begins at 12:45 p.m. Hawaii Time. Then, at 4:45 p.m. (HT) it's "A Prairie Home Companion's Hawaiian New Year's Eve," a three-hour special broadcast that will ring in 2012 across the country. Check local public radio listings for tune-in times in your area.
"New Year's Eve is supposed to be lighthearted, optimistic, even joyful, and for our listeners across America and overseas, Hawaii represents those things. Yes, I suppose it is a cliché, but it's a happy cliché, and it means that when we Statesiders get off a plane in Honolulu in that marvelous open-air airport and smell the sea breeze and the flowers, we feel an instant buoyancy. New Year's Eve tends to be a disappointing night, too much alcohol in crowded rooms with loud people. I can imagine someone sitting on a farm in Minnesota on December 31st and hearing soft-voiced Hawaiian singers and slack-key guitars and smelling the flowers and imagining beautiful people and deciding that 2012 may be a happy year after all."
— Garrison Keillor
In addition to Prairie Home favorites like Guy Noir and The Cowboys, both performances will feature actress Sue Scott, Tim Russell (the man of many voices), and sound-effects wizard Fred Newman, along with the Guy's All-Star Shoe Band, led by pianist Rich Dworsky. There will be an array of special guest performers, including slack key guitar and ukulele master Led Kaapana. And as always, there's a chance to catch up on the news from Lake Wobegon during Keillor's signature monologue.
Tickets for each show go on sale Saturday, November 19, in person at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Box Office or through Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000 or www.ticketmaster.com.
Currently in its 38th season, A Prairie Home Companion has made the fictional small town of Lake Wobegon part of American popular culture. The show is broadcast on close to 600 public radio stations nationwide, with a weekly audience that tops 4.3 million listeners. The program can also be heard on the Armed Forces Network Europe, the Far East Network, and in dozens of European cities via the Astra satellite network.
Garrison Keillor is the recipient of Grammy, ACE and George Foster Peabody awards, and he has been inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His books include Lake Wobegon Days, The Book of Guys, Lake Wobegon Summer 1956, Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance (Viking), A Christmas Blizzard (Viking), and Good Poems: American Places, a third volume of poetry selected by Keillor.
A Prairie Home Companion is produced by Prairie Home Productions and presented by American Public Media. The show is sponsored nationally by Allianz and Ford. Audio clips, scripts and more information on A Prairie Home Companion can be found online at www.prairiehome.org.

Jacqui Banaszynski To Lead Reporting Efforts For American Public Media's Public Insight Network
Pulitzer Prize winner to lead PIN editorial staff
(St. Paul, Minn, October 6, 2011) - American Public Media and the Missouri School of Journalism announced today that professor Jacqui Banaszynski will steer reporting efforts for APM's Public Insight Network (PIN), an initiative that connects trusted journalists with knowledgeable sources and each other. Banaszynski, a respected journalist, editor and educator, will begin immediately.
With Banaszynski as collaborations editor, PIN will expand its editorial team in order to produce stories of national importance and regional relevance and support similar reporting projects in PIN newsrooms around the country. Banaszynski also will embed PIN in her journalism classes and help establish a foundation for a sustained partnership between APM, the University of Missouri's journalism school and the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute.
"Jacqui has a stellar reputation in professional journalism and is a talented and inspiring leader," said Jon McTaggart, President and CEO, APM. "We are proud to be working with her and to be partnering with one of the preeminent journalism schools in the country."
Dean Mills, dean of the School of Journalism, said the collaboration has "nearly limitless" potential to strengthen journalism in the public interest. "The partnership with PIN," he said, "is a perfect fit with the Reynolds Institute and its mission to join citizens and journalists in programs that benefit democracy."
Banaszynski holds the Knight Chair in Editing at the University of Missouri and is a long-time faculty member at the Poynter Institute. She's mentored and motivated journalists around the world to tell stories of meaning and consequence. As a reporter for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, she won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for feature writing for "AIDS in the Heartland," an intimate look at the life and death of a Minnesota farm couple. She was a finalist for the 1986 Pulitzer in international reporting for her coverage of the famine in sub-Saharan Africa. Her reporting has taken her to all seven continents, including Antarctica.
"As the number of PIN newsrooms multiplies, so do the opportunities to work together and with the public, to do reporting that is more accurate, thoughtful, transparent and trustworthy," said PIN director Linda Fantin. "I can think of no one better than Jacqui to inspire and lead those collaborations."
Banaszynski, a former editor for The Seattle Times and The Oregonian in Portland, says she finds the prospect of working with PIN irresistible. "PIN is a 21st Century journalistic venture that is as exciting as it is practical and principled," said Banaszynski. "I look forward to working in partnership with newsrooms to foster the inclusiveness that is essential to true journalistic purpose in our fragmented and fast-moving world. Today's journalism students -- tomorrow's journalism leaders -- will be a core part of this initiative, and help us determine our role in the future."

Actress Sue Scott and Tim Russell (the man of many voices) will be on hand, as will Prairie Home's sound-effects wizard Tom Keith for the 4:45 p.m. show. (The recording "Highlights from Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion" from Nov. 17, 2001, is available through stolafrecords.com.) Last year Keillor invited the Women's Vocal Ensemble of the St. Olaf Choir to perform with him in a special live cinecast of APHC, and last spring he recorded a five-minute tribute video with the same young women to honor the St. Olaf Choir during its Centennial Reunion Banquet in June.
Now in its 38th season, A Prairie Home Companion is heard by some 4 million listeners on nearly 600 public radio stations nationwide, as well as on XM Radio, the Armed Forces Network Europe, the Far East Network, and in dozens of European cities via the Astra satellite network. The program is produced by Prairie Home Productions and presented by American Public Media. The show is sponsored nationally by Ford Motor Company. Audio clips, scripts, and more information on A Prairie Home Companion can be found online at prairiehome.org.
Host of public radio programs A Prairie Home Companion and The Writer's Almanac, Garrison Keillor is also the author of numerous books, including Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance (Viking), and the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently Good Poems: American Places (Viking).
The St. Olaf Choir, with 75 mixed voices, is the pioneer a cappella choir in the United States. Celebrating its centennial this year, the St. Olaf Choir has set a standard of choral excellence and remained at the forefront of choral artistry. Conducted since 1990 by Anton Armstrong, the St. Olaf Choir continues to develop the tradition that originated with its founder, F. Melius Christiansen.
The 92-member St. Olaf Orchestra under the direction of Steven Amdundson is among St. Olaf College's premier ensembles. Richard Ostling of Time magazine said, "I've always known about the great St. Olaf Choir, but when I tuned into the St. Olaf Christmas Festival (on National Public Television) I was astonished by the music of the St. Olaf Orchestra. It has to be one of the best college orchestras in the nation."
More than 600 St. Olaf College Muisicians, including the St. Olaf Choir and St. Olaf Orchestra, will perform in the 100th St. Olaf Christmas Festival "Rejoice, Give Thanks, and Sing" at Skoglund Center Auditorium Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 1 through 4. The Sunday afternoon performance will simulcast live to movie theaters across the nation. PBS will air a new one-hour Christmas special, "Rejoice, Give Thanks, and Sing," as part of this year's holiday programming, and Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) will present a live broadcast of the 2011 St. Olaf Christmas Festival.

WQXR, Carnegie Hall and APM Present "CARNEGIE HALL LIVE," A Season-Long Celebration of Carnegie Hall's 120th Anniversary
National Radio Series Brings Performances from All Three Stages of New York's Premier Concert Hall to Audiences Across the Nation and Worldwide, On Air and Online
(New York and Minneapolis, September 13, 2011) - WQXR, Carnegie Hall and American Public Media (APM) have partnered to present CARNEGIE HALL LIVE, a vibrant radio broadcast and digital series that will present twelve live performances by some of the world's foremost ensembles, soloists, and recitalists from the three stages of Carnegie Hall's 2011-2012 concert season. Originating from New York City, CARNEGIE HALL LIVE will stretch far beyond the Big Apple with live national radio broadcasts in markets across the country, and an extensive digital interactive presence that will reach audiences worldwide.
CARNEGIE HALL LIVE will launch on Tuesday, October 11 at 8pm ET with a highly anticipated performance by St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Orchestra. The broadcast series - hosted by WQXR's Jeff Spurgeon and APM's Fred Child - will continue through May 2012, with a range of luminaries, such as pianist Lang Lang in recital and the Berliner Philharmoniker to the outstanding early music ensemble L'Arpeggiata. Ten concerts will beam from Carnegie Hall's main Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage, while the venue's Zankel Hall and Weill Recital Hall will each play host to more intimate performances. Opened in 1891, the venerable Carnegie Hall celebrates its 120th anniversary throughout its 2011-2012 season.
The series is sponsored, in part, by Macy's, and distributed to public radio stations by APM.
Distinct in its size, scope, and reach, CARNEGIE HALL LIVE will bring a modern-day spin to the live radio broadcast with innovative and robust digital features that will build community and conversation around the music. During every live broadcast, WQXR, APM and digital partner NPR Music will host live chats, moderated by guest hosts on www.WQXR.org and www.carnegiehall.org. Through NPR Music's live event application and Twitter hashtag #CHLive, the online audience will be able to chat with each other and the hosts. The site will offer an exciting array of photographs and related video content, and audiences will able to submit questions to be answered during the intermission features created as part of select broadcasts.
Tied to the broadcast series, both www.wqxr.org/carnegiehalllive and www.classicalapm.org will stream live and on-demand audio; special videos of performers in WQXR's "Cafe Concerts"; "Top 5 at 105" videos featuring conductors talking about their favorite pieces and recordings; Carnegie Hall-produced video profiles; and photo galleries from each performance.
"This groundbreaking series will build on WQXR's capacity to create digital community and innovation around classical music," said Graham Parker, WQXR Vice President. "We are delighted to partner with American Public Media and Carnegie Hall to make this remarkable 120th anniversary celebration available to audiences in New York and around the world."
"Through CARNEGIE HALL LIVE, we're thrilled to be able to extend the Carnegie Hall concert experience beyond our walls to audiences worldwide," said Clive Gillinson, Carnegie Hall's Executive and Artistic Director. "Weíre excited to partner with WQXR and APM on this wonderful new series, designed to bring listeners together, deepening their connections to great music."
"Carnegie Hall is our nation's most famous venue," said Brian Newhouse, Classical Managing Director, APM. "We're thrilled to be able to bring the very best classical performances as they happen to our audiences across the nation."
All concerts will air live on WQXR 105.9 FM in New York and stream live at www.wqxr.org. The concerts will also broadcast live in more than 35 markets across the nation, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Miami, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Cincinnati, San Antonio, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, and Austin, among others. AMERICAN PUBLIC MEDIA'S MARKETPLACE LAUNCHES MARKETPLACE INDEX
Economic coverage is expanded with new weekday after-the-bell program
(ST. PAUL, Minn.) August 29, 2011 - Today, American Public Media's (APM) Marketplace launches Marketplace Index, a weekday report hosted by David Brancaccio that will "psychoanalyze" the economy each day as reflected in the markets. Marketplace Index is the latest example of Marketplace's commitment to providing timely economic news in an approachable way, so Americans and their families know how daily business developments impact them.
"No one is in a better position than Marketplace to address rising anxiety about the economy", said JJ Yore, Marketplace's VP and general manager. "Timely economic news during these turbulent times is essential. Marketplace Index is another way we are delivering what people want - news that explains what's happening on Wall Street in ways that Americans on Main Street can understand."
Available moments after the markets close, Marketplace Index will recap the day's closing numbers, and then go deeper by using storytelling and critical analysis to explore the dominant themes guiding the market. Brancaccio also will discuss with industry experts how the markets affected their own actions throughout the day.
"Getting into the heads of the people making wide-ranging decisions that affect our wealth and well-being will be a fascinating journey," said Brancaccio. "A bit of 'psychoanalysis' of market psychology can go a long way toward explaining the direction of the economy."
In addition to launching Marketplace Index and producing special coverage such as last week's The Breakdown, Marketplace is expanding its online content. Senior editor Paddy Hirsch is producing, "our index." This interactive, graphic representation of daily alternative indicators provides counterintuitive, tongue-in-cheek view of the state of the US economy. Brancaccio will profile "our index" at the close of each day's Marketplace Index broadcast.
Beginning today, Marketplace Index can be heard on the Minnesota Public Radio network and on 89.3 KPCC-FM, Los Angeles. Additional public radio stations will be adding the program to their own lineups over the next few weeks.
The website, marketplaceindex.org will be live at 4:30 p.m. Eastern today. Check back daily to download the latest episode which will be available weekdays at 4:45 p.m. Eastern.

American Public Media Names Deborah Clark Executive Producer, Marketplace
(ST. PAUL, Minn.) August 22, 2011 - American Public Media (APM) today named Deborah Clark executive producer of its flagship Marketplace franchise. In her new role, Clark will oversee editorial content of the widest reaching business news program service in the country. Marketplace Morning Report, Marketplace, Marketplace Money, and Marketplace Tech Report attract more than nine million listeners each week via public radio stations across the country. Clark succeeds long-time executive producer JJ Yore, recently appointed general manager of the franchise.
"Well over a hundred candidates applied to be Marketplace's next executive producer," said Yore. "In the end, Deb's broadcast journalism experience, her passion, and her deep knowledge of what makes Marketplace unique earned her the job."
"Being able to contribute to Marketplace's vision in this key role is a professional dream come true," said Clark. "I think we are in a period of tremendous growth, and the challenge of leading the portfolio at this time is exhilarating."
Clark originally joined Marketplace in 1995 as an associate producer, and returned in 2009 as senior producer, Marketplace Money. In between she spent time at NPR, where she rose to become executive producer of the former network program Day to Day. Clark is the recipient of several major broadcasting awards, including the Peabody and DuPont - both for her past work at Marketplace.
In response to current economic conditions, American Public Media is expanding Marketplace's service with new online content, broadcast specials, and more. "These are turbulent economic times in the global economy," said Yore. "Now more than ever, the American public is reliant on accessible information that helps them take charge of their futures. Marketplace delivers on this need better than any other news program out there."

Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion "Summer Love" Tour Hits The Road August 12th
Keillor and company to do concerts in 20 cities coast to coast
(SAINT PAUL, Minn.) On Friday, August 12, Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion "Summer Love" Tour kicks off a 20-city run that will take the popular radio host and his pals from East Coast to West Coast, Michigan to Memphis.
This concert tour on the everlasting theme of romantic love will be jam-packed with tender duets and ballads, poetry, and stories. Perfect for a late-summer date night!
While these are not APHC broadcast shows, they will include many favorite Prairie Home Companion elements - Guy Noir, Dusty and Lefty, and the News from Lake Wobegon. The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band and sound-effects man Fred Newman will be on hand. And depending on the particular date, you'll find either Andra Suchy, Heather Masse, or Sara Watkins on vocal duty - each a top-flight artist.
Garrison Keillor is the author of numerous books, including Life Among the Lutherans (Augsburg Books) and Pilgrims: A Wobegon Romance (Viking), and the editor of several anthologies of poetry, most recently Good Poems: American Places (Viking). He is the founder and host of the acclaimed public radio programs A Prairie Home Companion and The Writer's Almanac.
North Dakota native Andra Suchy is the daughter of two talented singers. By the time she was in grade school, she was traveling around, doing concerts and festivals with her family. These days, she sings with several groups in the Twin Cities area and has a solo recording called Patchwork Story.
Growing up in rural Maine, Heather Masse sang hymns and folk songs around home with her family. Now based in New York, this New England Conservatory of Music alum is a one-third of the Juno Award-winning Canadian trio The Wailin' Jennys. Her solo album is titled Song Bird.
Singer, songwriter, fiddle player Sara Watkins was only eight when she became one-third of the Grammy Award-winning acoustic trio Nickel Creek. Two decades later, she struck out on her own. A solo album, Sara Watkins (Nonesuch), was released in 2009.
Sound-effects man Fred Newman is an actor, writer, musician, and sound designer for film and TV. He is author of the book (and CD/CD-ROM) MouthSounds. Fred admits that, growing up, he was unceremoniously removed from several classrooms, "once by my bottom lip."
The Guy's All-Star Shoe Band is Richard Dworsky (leader, keyboards), Pat Donohue (guitar), Gary Raynor (bass), Peter Johnson (percussion), and Richard Kriehn (fiddle).
A Prairie Home Companion has been a public radio mainstay since 1974. It is heard by more than 4 million listeners on some 600 public radio stations nationwide, as well as on XM Radio, the Armed Forces Network Europe, the Far East Network, and in dozens of European cities via the Astra satellite network. More information can be found online at www.prairiehome.org.

SIXTEEN RENOWNED RECORDING ARTISTS RELEASE "RAISE YOUR VOICE!" A FREE ALBUM IN SUPPORT OF PUBLIC BROADCASTING
August 3, 2011 - 170 Million Americans for Public Broadcasting and ANTI- Records are pleased to announce the release of Raise Your Voice!, a 16-track compilation of music from ANTI- artists being offered as a free download to advocates for public broadcasting. Anyone who signs up to join the campaign can download the compilation -- available for a limited time only -- by visiting RYVoice.org. Supporters will also have the opportunity to share Raise Your Voice! with their friends and social networks.
Artists contributing tracks to Raise Your Voice! include:- Wilco - Tom Waits - Neko Case - Booker T. Jones - Man Man - Dr. Dog - Mavis Staples - Jolie Holland - William Elliott Whitmore - Tinariwen - Lost In The Trees - Sean Rowe - Marketa Irglova - Joe Henry - The Swell Season - Devotchka
Public broadcasting offers millions of hours of free music, arts and cultural programming to American audiences, thanks in part to federal funding. From national music programs such as public television's Austin City Limits and public radio's Mountain Stage to the diverse local programming on public radio music stations throughout the country, public broadcasting is a vital part of our nation's musical landscape.
Public radio preserves American culture and is one of the only places left where uniquely American music -- jazz, rock, bluegrass and classical -- can be heard by a mass audience. Public radio stations around the country play an important role in the music economy and have created a valuable partnership that connects audiences to music, and all those who devote their lives to it-performers, singer-songwriters, musicians, lyricists and composers. More than 100 local public radio stations broadcast full-time music and hundreds more include music as part of their programming lineups.
While the average station gets the majority of its funding from listeners, underwriters and other local sources, federal funding helps close the gap and keep many small and rural stations on the air. Without federal funding these stations could go dark and the platform that they've provided for so many musicians could go with it.
"We are thrilled to offer Raise Your Voice! to our advocates," said Jeff Nelson, co-director, 170 Million Americans for Public Broadcasting. "It is critical that we raise awareness about the importance of public broadcasting to music in America as we make our case to Congress to maintain federal funding for local stations across the country. We are grateful to ANTI- and these fantastic artists for their generosity and for standing up in support for public broadcasting."
Ari Picker, frontman for ANTI- band Lost in the Trees added, "Our culture needs public broadcasting. And public radio has been an enormous resource for musicians like myself. I feel extremely privileged to donate our music to Raise Your Voice! to boost awareness about the need to protect public broadcasting in America."
The website for Raise Your Voice! was created by Oniracom, a Santa Barbara-based audience marketing agency for music and entertainment.

The centerpieces of the effort are its website, 170MillionAmericans.org, Facebook page, Facebook.com/170Million, and Twitter feed at http://twitter.com/#!/170million, that give supporters of public media a way to take action in support of their local public radio and television stations.
About ANTI-Records
Epitaph Records was founded in 1981 by Brett Gurewitz of the influential punk rock band Bad Religion. This incredibly diverse and resolutely artist friendly label first entered the annals of pop culture in the early 90s when it introduced previously underground artists such as Rancid, The Offspring and Pennywise to a vastly larger audience, earning the bands gold and platinum records, and forever changing the sound of popular music. Epitaph has since added additional imprint ANTI-Records, which has developed into an independent power house servicing a roster of acclaimed and iconic artists such as Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Neko Case, Mavis Staples and many more. Epitaph Records currently operates out of offices in Los Angeles, Canada, Melbourne and the Netherlands.
